SOLAR ECLIPSE 2012: PORT DOUGLAS, AUSTRALIA

Picture
On November 14th, 2012, Port Douglas, Australia will host one of natures most rare and miraculous phenonomens; a total solar eclipse.  .

When the moons umbral shadow (the darker inner shadow of the moon) sweeps across the Earths surface, a total eclipse of the sun occurs.  This is known as the Path of Totality.  In order to see this path and the sun become completely eclipsed by the moon you have to be in a position somewehere within the narrow path of totatlity, and in 2012 this will be Port Douglas, Australia.

When the moon covers the sun, a magnificent glow is visable due to the sun's solar corona, which to the human eye is only visable in the breif moment of a total solar eclipse.  Therefore, scientists use these events to study the suns corna, and eclipse chases, known as "umpraphiles" travel vast distances to witness the spataculiar phenonomen, which they say cannot be fully described in words or pictures.
